CFO Alex Sink Discussed Her Career As Florida CFO
ABOUT ALEX SINK
Florida CFO
Alex Sink
is using her three decades of business experience to get results for the people of the state, cutting wasteful government spending, cracking down on financial fraud and reforming state-contracting practices to hold government more accountable.
Sink is currently serving her first term as
Florida
s CFO, having been elected statewide in 2006 her first run for public office. As CFO, Sink oversees nearly 3,000 employees and an annual budget of $300 million in the Department of Financial Services. She is also a statewide elected officer of the Florida Cabinet.
For over two years, CFO Sink has been an outspoken watchdog, demanding accountability for
Florida
s contracts with private companies including putting a stop to Project Aspire, an $85 million over-budget and under-performing accounting program she inherited upon taking office. CFO Sink is also working to cut waste in her own department, such as saving taxpayers $2.2 million annually by consolidating consumer-hotline call centers.
CFO Sink stands out as an aggressive consumer advocate, launching initiatives like the Safeguard Our Seniors Task Force, created to protect older Floridians from financial fraud, and
Florida
s Housing Help Initiative, which provides assistance to Floridians facing mortgage foreclosure.
Before her election in 2006,
Alex Sink
was a successful businesswoman, with 26 years of experience in the financial industry, culminating in her leadership of
Florida
s largest bank. While establishing herself as a leader in the business community, Sink also used her business skills to help the state, serving as vice chair of Florida TaxWatch and appointed by Governor Chiles to the Commission on Government Accountability to the People.
CFO Sink has worked on behalf of
Florida
s children through her service on Governor Chiles Commission on Education, the Hillsborough Education Foundation Board of Directors and as chair of Take Stock in Children. Her civic work also includes service in the Florida Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, Junior Achievement of West Central Florida and as chairman of the board of the United Way
of
Hillsborough
County

W. Palm's Deidre Newton- Florida Financial Literacy Council Appointed By Alex Sink
Deidre Newton is a fourth-generation Floridian and lifetime resident of Palm Beach County. She is a Florida Licensed Real Estate broker, a member of the Jupiter-Tequesta-Hobe Sound Association of Realtors and an active member of the Florida Association of Realtors(FAR). Newton is a leadership graduate from her local board and in 2008 was one of 15 brokers statewide selected to represent the Florida Association of Realtors in the Inaugural Leadership Academy in Orlando.
As a 20-year real estate professional, she specializes in commercial/investment sales and is a nationally recognized property-disposition specialist, a Florida Supreme Court-trained mediator and a regular participant on panels and boards as a real estate expert. Newton is often quoted in newspapers and the press on the trends in real estate and most recently on economic conditions and the real estate market.
Newton earned an Masters of Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University - H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship and holds a Bachelors of Business Administration from Northwood University with an emphasis in marketing. Newton is a proud graduate of her local Palm Beach Community College and earned an AA in Communications.
Newton is a former elected official in Palm Beach County having served on the Palm Beach County Soil and Water Conservation district from 1998-2002. She is the Vice Chair of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council and is active in politics, charities and associations across the state. Newton lives in historic West Palm Beach with her partner Kerry of 18 years. |

This premier sporting event promises 8 days of action packed womens professional tennis. This USTA Pro Circuit tennis tournament will be held May 3-10, 2009 at Kiwi Tennis Club in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida. All proceeds of the tournament will benefit the MIMA Foundation of Brevard, Inc. The weeklong event will feature womens professional tennis including singles and doubles with 74 matches played.
